In Odisha Government Press, many modernisation initiatives have been taken up for upgradation of technology and infrastructure.
The traditional Letter press printing system prevailing since inception of Odisha Government Press, has mostly been replaced by modern offset printing. As a result, there has been substantive improvement in the standard of printing both in terms of quality and quantity.
There are mainly three phases involved in the Printing Process, namely:
- Pre-Press (Before Printing)
- Press (Actual Printing)
- Post-Press (After Printing/Binding/Finishing)
The major advantages gained out of modernisastion in each of the phases are presented as under:
Pre-Press phase

The individual assembling of type materials for preparation of texts encounters quite a number of problem such as; a) composition of texts was very slow due to manual assembling of reversed types. b) Major raw materials i.e. metal alloys(composition of lead, tin and antimony) were no more available in the open market during early eighties and at the same time, Type Foundries were gradually closed soon-after introduction of Photo Type Setting and DTP systems. c) available type materials got defaced due to their frequent and prolonged use, resulting in poor quality printing. 2. a) The Date Entry Operator could compose the text matters right away.The size,shape and design of the letters could be adjusted and retained with few commands and thereby the composition speed became quite faster, easier and accurate. b) Preparation of Film Positives/Negatives was replaced by taking printouts directly from Laser Printer on to tracing papers/garware films. c) Introduction of Computer to Plate Technology (Ctp) eliminated a number of pre-press operations such as: i) Retouching, ii) Imposition, iii) Platemaking d) Multi-colour printing became simple and easy by introducing CtP Technology. |
Press (Actual Printing) Phase

| 1. The manufacturing of Letter press Printing Machines stopped during early eighties and the spare parts of those machines were no more available. As a result, it was difficult to put the existing Letter Press Printing Machines to use. 2. Few Letter press Printing Machines are still under use at different Branch Presses. 3. The production capacity of each Letter press Printing Machine is ranging from 5000 Impressions to 8,000 Impressions per day/shift. 4. It was not possible to print multi-colour reproductions with existing Letter Press Printing Machines as those machines were not consistent to withstand multi-colour registration. |
1.The printing out-put could be increased to a large extent consequent upon installation of web-fed and sheet-fed offset printing machines in Odisha Government Press. |
Post-Press (After Printing/Binding/Finishing) Phase

| 1. All the binding operations such as folding, gathering, sewing, binding, etc. were carried out manually requiring huge manpower and more time. | 1. Most of the operations involved in binding have been automatised by installing following machineries: - Folding Machine, Sewing Machine, Gathering Machine, Three Side Trimmer , Automatic Programmatic Cutting machine, - Foiling Machine, U.V.Coating Machine This resulted in tremondous improvement in quality of Finishing operations with minimum efforts. |

The Odisha Government Press has also adopted modernisation of other infrastructure activities as under:
- Use of Fork Lift for easy loading and unloading of Paper Reels.
- Installation of a Weigh Bridge for weighment of paper reels, waste papers, etc.
- Use of Battery-driven Pallete Truck for easy and smooth transportation of raw materials.
- Installation of a Solar Plant for adequate lighting within the Press Premises.
- Construction of Waste Paper Sheds for proper protection of waste papers from sun and rain.
