A Flying Training Institute namely “Govt. Aviation Training Institute” (G.A.T.I.) has been functioning under the Directorate of Aviation on P.P.P. mode since Nov, 2008 which started flying from January, 2009 for imparting flying training to the Pupil Pilots of Odisha and elsewhere to make their career as Commercial Pilots. Four trainer aircrafts i.e. Cessna FA-152 (VT-ENF), Cessna-152 (VT-EUW), Cessna-172S (VT-IAT) and Cessna-172R (VT-TED) along with one twin engine Piper Seneca (VT-NIK) are being maintained by the Institute for such training. The P.P.P. partner has now proposed to induct a multi-engine aircraft in place of one of its single engine aircraft to facilitate multi engine training of the Student Pilots. During the last five years, total number of 653 Pilot Students (SPL,PPL,CPL) have been admitted in the Institute till March,2020, out of which 60 Student Pilots have cleared their C.P.L. (Commercial Pilot Licence) and 08 Student Pilots have cleared their P.P.L. (Private Pilot licence). After revival of GATI under P.P.P. mode, two State Govt. Trainer Aircraft and four Private Partner’s Aircraft have flown 13764:45 Hours and 10890:15 Hours respectively and 1067:00 Hrs. in Twin Engine Piper Seneca, VT-NIK up to March, 2020 which is a substantial achievement for a recently revived Flying Training Institute. There is also a plan of expansion of Flying Training and to develop a Satellite Training base in the State. In order to expand the flying training, the day time flying training at Birasal Airstrip have been started from 26.11.2019.
